You Can Help : Byrd Chair in Conservation Biology
The Center for Conservation Biology along with the
Department of Biology and the College of William and Mary have announced
their intent to establish a faculty chair named in honor of Mitchell
A. Byrd. The goal of this endowed position is 1) to provide
educational opportunities to the student body and the community
in the field of conservation biology, 2) to further the core mission
of the Center for Conservation Biology, and 3) to honor the contributions
of Professor Byrd to the conservation of Virginia's wildlife.
Nature of Position
The Byrd Chair in Conservation Biology will be a permanent, full-time
faculty position within the Department of Biology at the College
of William and Mary. This position will have responsibilities in
both the Biology Department (teaching courses in conservation biology
and working with students on research) and the Center for Conservation
Biology (directing and further developing the Center's potential).
Funding Goal
The Byrd Chair will require one million dollars to endow. Once established,
the position will be eligible for matching funds under the Commonwealth
of Virginia's Eminent Scholars Program.
Status
To date, the Center for Conservation Biology has raised $258,600
toward the Byrd Chair. A formal campaign to raise the remaining
funds was initiated in the early spring of 2001.
