How You Can Help : Byrd Chair in Conservation Biology

The Center for Conservation Biology along with the Department of Biology and the College of William and Mary have announced their intent to establish a faculty chair named in honor of Mitchell A. Byrd. The goal of this endowed position is 1) to provide educational opportunities to the student body and the community in the field of conservation biology, 2) to further the core mission of the Center for Conservation Biology, and 3) to honor the contributions of Professor Byrd to the conservation of Virginia's wildlife.

Nature of Position
The Byrd Chair in Conservation Biology will be a permanent, full-time faculty position within the Department of Biology at the College of William and Mary. This position will have responsibilities in both the Biology Department (teaching courses in conservation biology and working with students on research) and the Center for Conservation Biology (directing and further developing the Center's potential).

Funding Goal
The Byrd Chair will require one million dollars to endow. Once established, the position will be eligible for matching funds under the Commonwealth of Virginia's Eminent Scholars Program.

Status
To date, the Center for Conservation Biology has raised $258,600 toward the Byrd Chair. A formal campaign to raise the remaining funds was initiated in the early spring of 2001.
