Tracking Map
This whimbrel left Virginia on 5/23/2008 and arrived at its breeding ground, in the Colville River watershed of Alaska, on 6/7/2008.
After leaving the breeding grounds on 7/12/2008 the whimbrel began moving west, arriving near Norrvik, AK on 7/13/2008. It stayed here for 4 days and then began moving southwest. It staged on the marshy delta of the Kuskokwim River, about 15 km downsteam from Bethel, AK from 7/192008 to 8/2/2008. On 8/3/2008 the whimbrel began moving south, then east towards the coast, and then south again. On 8/6/2008 the whimbrel was in Grays Harbor, WA, and then on 8/7/2008 it was in Willapa Bay, WA. It remained in Willapa Bay near the mouth of the Palix River until 8/23/2008 when it started moving east. On 8/24/2008 the whimbrel was over extreme south eastern Montana and in just 107 minutes it had flown on additional 78 miles to South Dakota. On 8/26/2008 she was over the border of Minnesota and South Dakota, and then on 8/27/2008 she was over the Apostle Islands of Wisconsin. On 8/28/2008 the position of the whimbrel indicated that she had made 180 degree turn somewhere over Lake Superior and had landed on the southwestern shore of Superior in extreme northwestern Wisconsin. On 8/30/2008 the whimbrel had settled on the shore of Superior along the border of Wisconsin and Minnesota and the activity sensor on the transmitter indicated that movement of the transmitter had ceased. A team of volunteers searched the area of the most accurate positions, but did not find the bird or the transmitter. We are still getting sporadic positions in the same area, but the activity sensor still shows no movement. Either the transmitter has come off of the bird or the whimbrel has met one of the many perils of migration.
