Bird Migration : Golden Eagle : 74417 Tracking

74417 caught in Harford Co, MD
This second-year female golden eagle came to one of our bait sites set up for capturing Bald Eagles at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. She was the smallest of the three goldens we caught and by far the most energetic of the bunch. After successfully deploying the transmitter and releasing the eagle, she returned the following week to another bait site nearby. We took some great shots through our spotting scope of the bird with the transmitter. She was the dominant bird on the deer carcass and defended the food from the bald eagles. After leaving APG in April 2008, she flew 2,600 km north to the northern most part of Quebec along the Hudson Strait. There is a historic golden eagle breeding population near the Inuit town of Salluit. This is likely is her natal area. In October 2008, this eagle migrated south to winter on the Chesapeake Bay.
