Safety Tips

Always think about your safety when surveying Nightjars. A few suggestions to make your survey the safest include:

  • Park off the road during counting stops
  • Stand off the road surface when conducting surveys
  • Leave parking lights on throughout the duration of a count
  • Wear a reflective vest or headlamp, or carry a small flashlight so other drivers are aware of your exact presence
  • Always check for ticks on your clothing or skin when you get home to prevent transmission of lyme-disease and other tick-borne illness.
