Education

B.S. in Renewable Natural Resources (Wildlife and Fisheries Science), University of Arizona (1993)
M.S. in Renewable Natural Resources (Wildlife and Fisheries Science), University of Arizona (1999) Ph.D. in Natural Resources (Wildlife Ecology), University of Vermont (2007)

Professional Experience

I participated in research on the population dynamics and foraging ecology of Double-crested Cormorants on Lake Champlain from 2001-2007. As part of this research, I developed models to project changes in the cormorant population expected from management intended to reduce population sizes. The primary focus was to capture unintended consequences of management and incorporate these consequences into the management decision framework. Portions of this research were incorporated into my doctoral research at the University of Vermont.

My interest in waterbirds began when I was a graduate student at the University of Arizona. At the time, my research focus was consumption of lead fishing sinkers by a variety of waterbirds across the United States.

My focus at The Center for Conservation Biology is the ecology of waterbirds in the Chesapeake Bay and mid-Atlantic region. My goal is to expand the research program of The Center and provide data that can be applied to conservation of waterbirds regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Research Interests

My research interests fall within the broad scope of applied ecology. I am most interested in conducting research that can be directly applied to improve management and conservation of wildlife populations. Within this broad field, I am interested in population dynamics and habitat selection of waterbirds and understanding how management intervention influences these processes.
