Education
B.S. in Biology, College of William
and Mary (1981)
M.A. in Biology, College of William and Mary (1990)
Professional Experience
From 1985 to 1994 I held the eastern Nongame & Endangered Wildlife
Biologist position for the VA Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
In that position, I coordinated research and management efforts
for all T&E bird species in eastern Virginia. Major contributions
included coordinating Virginia's early involvement in the international
"Partners in Flight" effort, and producing educational
literature to help bring nongame wildlife conservation to the forefront.
I joined the Center for Conservation Biology in late 1994 and now
serve as the senior staff biologist. My primary duties include:
generating proposals, developing and executing budgets, and managing
selected research and management efforts.
Funding
In my time at the Center I have been awarded grants and contracts
totaling approximately $450,000. These awards have primarily dealt
with baseline avian inventories and monitoring, management, and
survey work on Red-cockaded Woodpeckers.
Research Experience
Examples of Research Projects
Avian inventories of National Parks within the mid-Atlantic
region
Investigation of habitat use by Canada Geese in staging areas
along the St. Lawrence River in eastern Canada
Red-cockaded Woodpecker foraging behavior and home range size
Landscape level patterns in neotropical migrant distribution in
the Chickahominy watershed
Habitat requirements of early successional bird communities in
the mid-Atlantic region
Magnitude and timing of the fall migration of Northern Saw-whet
Owls through the lower Delmarva Peninsula
Habitat use and migration chronology of migrant shorebirds along
the Bay of Panama
